Highlights for 2010

  • Reported more than $7.4 million in assets at the end of the year, the highest level since the Permanent Endowment was created in 1982.  This growth resulted from donor generosity and the sound asset management provided by the Martha's Vineyard Financial Group.
  • Awarded more than $105,000 in grants to 48 Island nonprofit and public organizations in the areas of art and culture, community and civic affairs, education, the elderly, the environment, health and human services and youth.
  • Approved $123,600 in scholarships to 54 Island students pursuing higher education and $6,000 in awards to seven Islanders preparing for their United States Coast Guard 100 Ton Master Licenses.
  • Issued the first grant award from the Lillian Hellman Recreational Fund to the Aquinnah Cultural Center. This grant fund, established in 2010, supports recreational, leisure and educational activities for school age children on Martha's Vineyard with a preference for programs serving children from Aquinnah.
  • Awarded the first scholarships from the Jacqueline A. Pimentel Art Scholarship Fund, established in October 2009 for the benefit of Vineyard residents with "art as part of their essence and with a passion for their craft."
  • Welcomed the Embarking Peacemaker Fund, a scholarship fund created in November by the Martha's Vineyard Peace Council for graduating high school seniors on Martha's Vineyard demonstrating a commitment to working for peace.
  • Named Ross Gannon and Nat Benjamin, designers and builders of classic wooden sailing craft on Martha's Vineyard, as the twenty eighth recipients of the Creative Living Award which recognizes individuals and organizations who have contributed significantly to the quality of life on the Island.
  • Welcomed Sandra Grymes, Melissa Hackney and Edward Miller to the Board. 
  • Hosted the second annual meeting of Island grantmakers.
  • Developed an outreach program to educate the community about the work of the Permanent Endowment through a number of media outlets.
  • Established a working relationship with the Cape Cod Foundation for the provision of financial accounting services.
